THE HISTORY OF
Mount Calvary Baptist Church
Mount Calvary Baptist Church traces its origins to the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, which held its first meetings at 15th and "K" Street. After the sale of that building, the congregation moved to the Community House at 1311 S. "M" Street. Under the guidance of Rev. Raymond Cain, with assistance from Rev. Rufus E. Altheimer, the church was officially organized. The founding members included Rev. Raymond Cain, Louis H. Jackson, Sherwood Barnett, Freddie Mae Barnett, Jeanetta Alexander, Julia Cain, Marzenell Jackson, John H. Phillips, Richard Wilson, John D. Waters, and Randolph Willis. All joined by Christian experience, except for Randolph Willis, who became a candidate for baptism. Elder Altheimer extended the right hand of fellowship, and following this, the members voted to name the church Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
