THE HISTORY OF
THE HISTORY OF

Mount Calvary Baptist Church

Mount Calvary Baptist Church traces its origins to the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, which held its first meetings at 15th and "K" Street. After the sale of that building, the congregation moved to the Community House at 1311 S. "M" Street. Under the guidance of Rev. Raymond Cain, with assistance from Rev. Rufus E. Altheimer, the church was officially organized. The founding members included Rev. Raymond Cain, Louis H. Jackson, Sherwood Barnett, Freddie Mae Barnett, Jeanetta Alexander, Julia Cain, Marzenell Jackson, John H. Phillips, Richard Wilson, John D. Waters, and Randolph Willis. All joined by Christian experience, except for Randolph Willis, who became a candidate for baptism. Elder Altheimer extended the right hand of fellowship, and following this, the members voted to name the church Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Milestones in the Early Years

  • May 24, 1964: The Sunday School was organized with Brother Richard Wilson as Superintendent. The Usher Board was also established, and Brother Sherwood Barnett began training to become a deacon. Five new members joined.
  • June 13, 1964: The first business meeting was held.
  • June 28, 1964: The first baptism ceremony welcomed five candidates.
  • September 27, 1964: John D. Waters, Sherwood Barnett, and Jim Stansell were ordained as deacons.
  • October 15, 1964: The Youth Choir was formed.
  • November 15, 1964: John D. Waters became Chairman of the Deacon Board.
  • December 2, 1964: The Senior Usher Board was established, with Rebecca Terrell as President, Julia Cain as Treasurer, and Clide C. Cobb as Secretary.
A Growing Church Family

A Growing Church Family

In 1965, the first building fund drive commenced, leading to the purchase of the sanctuary at 1311 South "I" Street on November 15, 1968. The mortgage was fully paid, and the title was celebrated with a mortgage-burning ceremony on May 21, 1978.

During his 35 years of leadership, Pastor Cain ordained five ministers and 14 deacons. Upon his passing on November 29, 1999, Rev. Floyd L. Price served as acting pastor until July 2000, when Rev. Tarrance D. Tucker was called to lead.

Under Pastor Tucker's leadership, the church grew spiritually and numerically. Ministries flourished, including the Deacon and Deaconess Boards, Sunday School, various choirs, and community outreach efforts such as Mama Cain's House, a clothing and food distribution center dedicated to the memory of First Lady Julia Cain.

The church navigated challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic with faith and resilience, maintaining worship through online services and strict safety protocols. Despite losses, the congregation continued its mission of serving God and the community.

Celebrating 60 Years and Leadership Transition

Celebrating 60 Years and Leadership Transition

In 2024, Mount Calvary Baptist Church celebrated 60 years of service to God with a renewed commitment to revitalizing its ministries and community outreach. That same year, Pastor Tarrance D. Tucker retired after 24 years of dedicated service. Rev. Levi Duberry served as interim pastor until January 2025, when Rev. Paul H. Metellus was called to lead the church.

Guided by Proverbs 29:18, "Where there is no vision, the people perish," the church continues its mission with steadfast faith.

This is our testimony and our history. With God’s guidance, we press on toward the goal (Philippians 3:12-14).
